Nestled near the towering Chaukhamba massif in the Garhwal Himalayas, Satopanth Tal is a sacred lake steeped in mythological significance. This pristine triangular lake, with its crystal-clear green waters, holds a special place in Hindu mythology as the abode where Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva) once meditated, shaping the destiny of the universe.
Commencing from Mana, the last village before the Indo-China border in Uttarakhand, the trek to Satopanth Tal begins alongside the glistening Alaknanda River. Traverse through picturesque landscapes, passing Alkapuri glacier, and ascending through lush meadows adorned by Laxmiban and Chakrateerth. As you approach the lake at an altitude of 4,350 meters, be mesmerized by the serene surroundings and the towering peaks of Nilkantha, Chaukhamba, Balakun, Kamet, and Abi Gamin that form the backdrop.

Badrinath is about 300 km from Dehradun. It takes about 10-11 hours to reach Badrinath by taxi. So, make sure you reach Dehradun at night so that you can leave for Badrinath early next morning and rest for a few hours. Taxis usually leave for Dehradun early in the morning. After reaching Badrinath in the evening, you can visit the local market and have a darshan of Badri Narayan and get ready for the trek the next day.
We start our day with an easy walk towards the Somtoli meadows above the Alaknanda River. A little later you will see the 400 ft high Vasudhara Falls on the opposite bank. The trail climbs gradually to Somtoli crossing the landslide section. You might find some shepherds or their empty caves here. From here, a short walk through a boulder section takes us to our campsite marked by a cluster of Bhojapatra trees on the slopes. The campsite offers spectacular views of Alakapuri, the mouth of the Alaknanda river and the starting point and the Balakun peak.
The trail gets even more challenging today. We will start with a steep climb through rocks and pebbles to Sahastradhar. As we climb higher up the valley, views of Neelkanth, Balakun and Chaukhamba open up. After reaching Sahastradhar, we will cross a small stream and walk to a flat area where dozens of streams are flowing and merging into each other. Then, we start crossing the left (true right) lateral moraine of the glacier coming down from Chaukhamba at the top of the valley. After Sahastradhara the trail climbs steeply again followed by a short flat walk on the upper snow slopes to reach our camping site at Chakratirth. We will camp at Chakratirth for the night.
Although today's trail is short and easy to climb, it passes through tricky boulder sections along the left (true right) lateral moraine. We will cross two spurs coming down the slopes of Neelkanth and reach Satapanth Lake - a beautiful blue triangular lake. Throughout the day, we will have spectacular views of Chaukhamba and Neelkanth with many small glacial lakes on our right. After spending some time at the lake, we will return to Chakratirth for the night.
Today we will retrace our path and reach Badrinath where we will stay in a hotel for the night.
Today you will depart from Badrinath to Dehradun
