Overview:
The Panch Kedar Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It covers five ancient temples located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand — Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar. Each temple represents a different part of Lord Shiva’s body, as per the legend of the Pandavas. The journey combines devotion, trekking, and the serene beauty of the Himalayas.
Highlights:
- Duration: 11 Days / 10 Nights
- Best Season: May to October
- Total Distance (Approx): 850 km (by road) + 70 km (trekking)
- Maximum Altitude: 3,680 m (Tungnath)
- Route: Rishikesh to Rishikesh
Mythological Significance
After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva’s forgiveness for their sins. Shiva, avoiding them, took the form of a bull and disappeared into the ground at Kedarnath. His body parts appeared at five different places, now known as the Panch Kedar temples:
- Kedarnath: Hump of the bull
- Madhyamaheshwar: Navel
- Tungnath: Arms
- Rudranath: Face
- Kalpeshwar: Hair (Jata)
